TO READ TOGETHER
Zacchaeus was a tax collector in Jericho, and because tax collectors worked with the Romans and often overcharged people, they were excluded by the community. When Jesus came to Jericho, Zacchaeus climbed a tree to see him. Jesus noticed him and asked to stay in his house. Jesus chose to honour Zacchaeus very publicly. Zacchaeus was so overwhelmed he promised to give half of his possessions to the poor and to repay fourfold anyone he had cheated.
Jesus includes people who are left out, and kids want to be included, just like Zacchaeus. Kids might empathize with Zacchaeus because of his stature and their related experiences of being too small or not mature enough for some things.
TO TALK ABOUT:
This story challenges kids to look for the Zacchaeus’ in their own lives. Ask kids if they’ve noticed people at school or in church who seem outside the community, and how they might help those people feel more welcome.
TO PRAY TOGETHER
Dear God, help others to feel as though they’re being welcomed by you when they’re being welcomed by us. Amen.
TO DO TOGETHER
Go to a park near your house and climb as high as you can on the playground equipment. How far can you see? Do you think you are as high as Zacchaeus was in the tree?
We have a few bins at the sign in desk with worship CDs, DVDs, Kids books and parent books for you to borrow. Take a few minutes to have a look this weekend.
Thanks for feeding the puppy each week to help us support Miguel. The kids are covering about 50% of the cost of this each month which is pretty great. Let’s see if we can do more of it!
